ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation)
ETA, meaning Electronic Travel Authorisation, is a type of permission to enter the UK, which will be obligatory for all travellers that are not a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, regardless of age.
The ETA system involves application for entry that is later verified with information of the person applying in the data base. The permit can be given automatically by the system or can be processed by an officer, if the system finds adverse information about the applicant. The process of verification may take 3 days. In unusual circumstances the time of processing can be longer.
The ETA permission is valid for two years or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever is sooner. The permission is obligatory for people who intend to stay in the country for tourism or transit.
The cost of the application is covered by the applicant and is 10 GBP. Once the application is submitted, the refund is impossible.
Citizens of European Union member states, Ireland excluded, will be able to apply for the ETA entry permission from 5 March 2025 to enter the UK from 2 April 2025.
EES (Entry/Exit System)
EES is an entry/exit system from the European Union for automatic electronic monitoring of the Schengen area border crossings by citizens of third-countries, meaning non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals.
The EES system will register name, date of birth, type of document and biometric information like fingerprints and face photos. The system will also collect information about refusals of entry.
Implementation of the EES system will replace traditional passport stamps with electronic registration. The system’s main adjective is prevention of illegal migration and document frauds. It is assumed that undertaking those action will help to improve safety of the EU’s citizens. Additionally, automated control will enable travellers to check in faster and more comfortably.
The system implementation date is not yet known, but it will not be earlier than 2025.
