The renovation of the Wawel vessel took place from 8 to 29 March at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdańsk. The aim of the works was to renew the class of the ferry. During the works, an overhaul and maintenance of the underwater part of the hull, periodic inspection and servicing of equipment, devices, fire-fighting systems and life-saving appliances, as well as repairs to the plating of the funnels were carried out. Additional fire monitoring was also installed on the ferry on the cargo decks.

The ferry Wawel was built in 1980 in Sweden at the Malmö shipyard. It was then refitted in 1989 at Bremerhaven. Further work was carried out on the ferry in 2004, when the vessel went to Polferries. In 2023, the Wawel ferry underwent a dockside survey at the ‘Gryfia’ shipyard in Szczecin, where work was carried out on the ship's hull, maintenance and painting of the vessel.

The Wawel ferry can accommodate 1000 passengers. It has a 1490 m loading line, which means it can take 310 cars and 50 lorries. Its operating speed is 16,7 knots, or about 30 km/h.
