The port of Trelleborg has been granted a co-financing from the European Union for onshore power supply in ferry berths 10 and 11. The financing has been granted from the EU’s programmes supporting transport infrastructure, Alternative Fuels Infrastructure and Connecting Europe.
The EU’s project aims to deploy on shore power supply in the ports of Trelleborg in Sweden and Lübeck-Travemünde in Germany. A large part of energy delivered to the port of Trelleborg will be produced through the port’s two wind turbines.
The project is called Baltic-Green-NET and it has been already awarded 2 230 500 euros for onshore power supply.
The Lübeck Port Authority is a partner in the project and the port of Trelleborg coordinates it.
Ulf Sonesson, the landlord of the Trelleborg port, says that he was very happy to hear about this information and another environmental investment. He also points out that the project will be an extension of the usefulness of the port's wind turbines, which will be able to supply the port's customer ferries with clean energy. Mr Sonesson points to the many environmental benefits of the technology, including avoiding carbon emissions when the ferries are in port. Mr Sonesson's statement also indicates that the project will contribute to a green corridor in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Germany.
