The Fréjus Tunnel – INFORMATION

Le tunnel du Fréjus connects Modane (France) with Bardonecchia (Italy) under the Col du Fréjus pass in the Cottian Alps.

It is one of the main transalpine transport routes between France and Italy.

The entrance to the tunnel from the French side, near Modane, is accessible from the A43 motorway (which runs from Chambéry). The entrance from the Italian side is at a height, near Bardonecchia. It is accessible from the A32 motorway, which runs from Turin.

Toll stations are located on both the French and Italian side.

The tunnel is part of the E70 route (in the Italian road system, it is marked as T4 and is part of this country’s motorway network).

The road in the tunnel is a single carriageway with one lane in each direction.

The tunnel is 12.87 kilometres long. The entrance to the tunnel on the French side is 1,228m above sea level. On the Italian side it is at 1,298m above sea level.

Its construction began in 1974. In 1980, it was put into operation.

When buying a ticket to the Fréjus Tunnel, you must keep in mind that:

  • The ticket is valid for four days from the date of booking.
  • The maximum permitted speed in the tunnel is 70kph, the minimum speed is 50kph.
  • Minimum distance between vehicles: 150m (100m if vehicles have stopped inside the tunnel).
  • Passage by EURO 0, 1, or 2 emission standard trucks is prohibited.
  • NOTE: Since 1st July 2020, passage by Euro 3 and Euro 4 emission standard trucks through the Fréjus Tunnel has been prohibited too.
  • The maximum permissible height of a vehicle is: 4.30m.
