The Øresund Bridge – INFORMATION, MAP

The Bridge over the Sound (Danish: Øresundsbron, Swedish: Öresundsbron) runs across the Sound Strait and connects Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with Malmö, Sweden.

The Malmö-Copenhagen link actually consists of the 7,845-metre-long bridge, a 4,055-metre-long artificial island, and a 3,510-metre-long tunnel.

This route offers a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction as well as two railway tracks. The road that runs along the bridge is part of European road E20. The Øresund Bridge, opened on 1st July 2000 is the longest bridge in Europe, as well as being the longest bridge in the world that connects two countries.

Its construction began in 1995 and was completed on 14th August 1999.

On that day, His Royal Highness Prince Frederick of Denmark and Her Royal Highness, heiress to the throne, Victoria of Sweden met halfway across the bridge to celebrate its creation. The official opening took place on 1st May 2000 and was attended by Margrethe II (Queen of Denmark) and Carl XVI Gustaf (King of Sweden).

In the year 2016 alone, the Øresund Bridge was crossed by more than 460,000 trucks and 220,000 vans.

The Øresund Bridge – Transporting ADR dangerous goods

ADR dangerous goods can be transported over the Øresund Bridge at no additional cost. However, certain restrictions apply in order to ensure the safety of road users and personnel on the bridge.

Road tunnels with restrictions applicable to the transport of dangerous goods are divided into five tunnel categories, from A to E. The Øresund Tunnel has been assigned the following categories:

Daily from 06:00 to 23:00: Category E

Daily from 23:00 to 06:00: Category B

Category E imposes a restriction on all the dangerous goods that must be marked in accordance with the provisions of the ADR treaty, except for UN. 2919, 3291, 3331, 3359, 3373.

Category B imposes a restriction on dangerous goods that can lead to a major explosion (see provisions of the ADR, part 8, point 8.6).

These restrictions do not apply when dangerous goods are transported pursuant to ADR section 1.1.3 on exemptions.
